Recessions Reflection

I am working on a unit from my art foundation that is about recession.
I wanted to do a found footage video on the Tottenham riots as it is a goverment debate on who is to blame for the riots. Even now there are different opinions but there is one truth, and found footage shows a reality to the event.

Once I got the footage I picked it apart into clips that I could use, this is to give an opinion or meaning to a now senstive subject. The artist that helped me to develop my work through was Susan Hiller as I experimented with her uses of colour and effects helped with my development of the found footage piece. As well as Elizabeth Price as the sound and text on her video that won the Turner prize effected how I work with another two video developments, all came out different to each other, giving varied effects to the same subject.

Despite trying different approaches I thought that this idea was coming to a dead end as I did not know how I could develop further, as I thought that I couldn't get my point across. All of the found footage showed only one side of the debate, that the public are in the wrong. I decided to get a second opinion on if I should countuine with found footage and the subject. My tutor reminded me that I work better if the subject is more personal. So I changed my idea from political to metaphorical, using the other meaning of recession as the focus of my work.

Final video's (for museums)

The Zabludowicz collection
I chose the Zabludowicz collection because of the collector himself as he can have the lifestyle he wants and how he wants to relate to the public. Also it has a very interesting background with the building's history and with the owners history with arms dealing and he is political where as he bought a religous building.

Chaim "Poju" Zabludowicz is a London-based billionaire who has generously funded the Conservative Party in the UK and the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI).
To know more clip on the texts, this will send you to the website.
This is his gallery website, link is below:

  • This is the first video which has the hangover 2 sound track. This representing the history of the building and owner.
  • the sound show is taking a wishy washy meaning as the film is my that strongly related to the piece but still give the piece more meaning by showing it in a different way.
This is the positive video- video one out of three but cut down to two for my project
This shows his background of arms dealing and the history of the building being a chapel.  this is about where he got his money for to start this gallery from helping people kill too helping people learn more about art as well letting people and schools go in there for free and viewer these new artist.
Name of video two: Chose your side

("Zabludowicz is the ambassador who finances and personally deals with advancing the status of Israel, but on the other hand he has sharp criticism about the information services provided by Israel.' He is 'well-connected to [British] politics, and in recent months he has been one of the businessmen and contributors with very close relations with David Cameron, the Conservative candidate for Prime Minister, who, according to surveys, is viewed as certain to be elected. The evening of the day he is being interviewed, he asks to finish by 18:00 because, at 19:00 he is participating in a meeting of a select few with Cameron.")

  • This has 007 music, this link to weapons and relate to the owner of the gallery as he is an arms dealer.
Negative viewed video-video two out of three but two was presented
This is the negative video as he has this gallery because he sold weapons that kill people and he buys a gallery for his wife out of his arms dealing that made him one of the top 20 richest person in the UK.
007 gives the idea of action and weapons, but I want to show what he is and how he helped to kill many people by giving them weapons for money. you can say that if he didn't some else will.
He seen as an enemy to some people and considered a hero to others and I am trying to capture the point of both arguements.

I learned with working on the project that it is diffcult to work with imovie 09 when it comes to split screen as imovie 011 would have made the video much more clearer as well as given more of a message to the split screens it self. I preferred the hangover video to the 007 video as I wanted to the meaning to be hiden within the video. Where as the 007 video needs a different kind of split screens to show what I wanted it to mean.

If I were to do the project again I would re-film with a dolly and tripod to get at better quality of film, as well as start filming from the outside of the gallery. I would start filming as the location is interesting (chapel) and can reflect on his crimes also it can relate to a documentary format.

The repeated form in contemporay art

Marcus Harvey, Myra 1995 gave me an idea on relating the repeated image to the image made. Marcus’s work Myra was seen as sick and disgusting art piece at the time. As well, one of the mothers of the children asked for it to be removed from the gallery. This was because the women in the image was a known serial killer, that tortured young children and this story touched the nation. This created fury for the mothers of the children murdered. This touched me as the story meant something in relation to my own.

I wanted to express an opposing view to Harvey’s in my work, but I still used the human face as my subject.  Myra Hindley took away freedom from people so I wanted to work giving freedom back into my work.  Many people still do not have there own freedom and many countries chose not to have freedom of speech. This is why I wanted to do freedom in a portrait  form.
One of the other images I looked at was Antony Gormley’s Field, this made me feel as if the work was encroaching on the room, it felt like the work has cornered you in that room and gave a claustrophobic feeling to the work. It tried to take away your personal space but how the work was set out tried to create a waving motion to give the idea of freedom. This is like an opportunity to get out and have your freedom.
I feel the mentioned artists are taking a negative view on the world, and this is in conflict with my own work.  I want to make a piece that expresses positive ideas rather than negative ones.  The idea of having androgynous face is the you can have freedom even if you female or male and the idea that every one has there own freedom even if they are a child. The wave relate to the soul and to freedom, this also relate to the eyes are the key to the soul. In my work to can see wave being product by the eyes this link to freedom is what your soul wants.
I feel that I could develop off my final piece to progress within this subject matter, using the idea of putting waves into a portrait to show the freedom we have or need. It gave me another ideas that I might progress on in the future. This idea is to have a glass or crystal skull and have water as waves as well putting it on a moving plate, so it can move and create waves.  The influence for this was perhaps Damien Hirst’s For The Love Of God the skull in that piece helped to develop my idea that I might progress on.

Another idea was to countuine the idea of waves and create a room to display them in.  Using narrow aquarium's to give the effect of living waves being curated in a sort of zoo.  Calm, sedate waves flowing slowly; and other, quicker waves representing anger or impatience. This would be displayed with mirrors to create an effect of reflection of life and emotion.  This can be created by light and changing the consistency or the strength of the lighting.  Taking away the wall that people have set as a defence against raw emotion the exhibit is transparent.  Instead of bottled emotions these are free.

  • This is my finish piece. left full image, right close up of the eye.

Interesting if I move on to video art

This video would help to change my editing skill I how I made video. I might use this clip on my next project when I find out what my next project is about.

I love how it has been filmed and where they have film this video as well the dub step beat-box music.
what i like about this video

exploring to get development

I when to the beach on Saturday a took some picture these picture could help me to develop projects in the future so these are some of the images I got.

Larger the images are the more interested I am with them.

Artist that would help develop

This is a list of artist and some of their works that might help me to develop my skills or work.
Susan Hiller

Psi Girls 1999 features imagery from films about girls with telekinetic powers, synchronised on five large screens at the moment of high tension in each film, when the girls use their extraordinary psychic powers to move objects. The excerpts, from Brian De Palma’s The Fury (1978), Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker(1979), Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter (1984), Danny DeVito’s Matilda (1996) and Andrew Fleming’s The Craft (1996), are saturated in washes of vivid colour. The soundtrack featuring the drumming and rhythmic clapping of a gospel choir, reaches a crescendo at this point, a familiar cinematic device to increase tension, only to end abruptly with a burst of white noise and a period of silence. The use of different coloured filters in each of the projections, immerses the viewer in coloured lights and adds to the range of physical sensations experienced.
Psi Girls 1999
5 channel video projection with sound, synchronised
Duration 15 minutes
Tate. Presented by Digby Squires 2004, accessioned 2007
 T12447

My opinion is that the editing is great and the tensions from the films and the sound edited in give off a good link back to the girl presented in the video.
This is a 50 second clip of a 15 minutes video.

Bruces Nauman
I liked some of his work such as these (see links below.)
Bouncing in the Corner, no 1
http://www.vdb.org/titles/bouncing-corner-no-1
Lip Sync
http://www.vdb.org/titles/lip-sync
The work grabbed me by how it was presented and the sound as well as the body sculpture and langues.

Martha Rosler
From A to Z, Rosler "shows and tells" the ingredients of the housewife's day, giving us a tour that names and mimics the ordinary with movements more samurai than suburban. Rosler's slashing gesture as she forms the letters of the alphabet in the air with a knife and fork, is a rebel gesture, punching through the "system of harnessed subjectivity" from the inside out.
the transformation of the woman herself into a sign in a system of signs that represent a system of food production,

Semiotics of the Kitchen

6 minutes and 13 second video of this housewife showing the kitching and telling us the objects name but in the alphabet.

Stan Douglas
this website you can see some of his works but i couldn't find any of his video. but if i find any i will upload them to the blog.
He also has a wiki page this is the link to it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Douglas
this is a video i just find of his
This video has a voice over that gives off a very nice effect that narrating the film.

Found an artist that could help develop on one of my ideas.

Reflection on the transforming the everyday

This is one of my ideas development to see if my idea would work.

Idea six: Is transforming movement into colour
How can I develop it by using an artist that would improve my idea to get the best work that I can.
this idea could be developed into a video or several images. The images above are test of what I want to progresses on into a final ideas, but these are only tester so they have limited quality.
this idea is one out of six but also one of the two I want to progresses and develop into a better or putting both of them together to create a improve final piece.

Transforming the everyday

I just started on a new project transforming the everyday.
With the idea I want to progress in a reality of mental state example- making a viewer-able brain spilling out emotion.

Than i had another idea of how medical, having your body transformed into the prefect person.
How people feel about their own body's and the improvement that they might not need, but want.

  •   How men look at the prefect women?- Most men of my age (18) that i spoke to like women 5.6-5.9 that have big boos, thin wast, big bum and skinny legs. than i looked up the prefect women image on Google and one face kept on coming up was Cheryl Cole.
  • Most women that i know of all size feels like that can be skinnier or have work done to their body's to improve them.
So i would like to progress on this transformation into a development stage to see if it could be a finnal piece, but i have much research to progress on to get to the last stage of my work.

Transcription Project

As I progresses in my project. i went from a more of photographic way. the art work i am transcribing in from the national gallery and it is called the Venus and Mars.
This image is seen below.
This is what the national gallery wrote about this image.
Mars, God of War, was one of the lovers of Venus, Goddess of Love. Here Mars is asleep and unarmed, while Venus is awake and alert. The meaning of the picture is that love conquers war, or love conquers all.

This work was probably a piece of bedroom furniture, perhaps a bedhead or piece of wainscoting, most probably the 'spalliera' or backboard from a chest or day bed. The wasps ('vespe' in Italian) at the top right suggest a link with the Vespucci family, though they may be no more than a symbol of the stings of love.

A lost Classical painting of the marriage of Alexander and Roxana was described by the 2nd-century Greek writer, Lucian. It showed cupids playing with Alexander's spear and armour. Botticelli's satyrs may refer to this. Mars is sleeping the 'little death' which comes after making love, and not even atrumpet in his ear will wake him. The little satyrs have stolen his lance - a joke to show that he is now disarmed.

But i gave my self some of the different meaning that i feel about it.so these are some of the word i felt it meant.
  •  Sexual
  •  Layout
  •  Beauty
  • Weak/Strong
  • Darkness
  • Shape
I developed my own idea with photos and Photoshop.
These are some of my final piece as i have 5 images as my final piece these are only 2 of them.
Both of these images have there own dark meaning behind them, but i will tell you a little about them.
this one above is of the man being stronger then the women and the women has been blurred out to create a effect of her being scared.

this one is more about the women and the giving of strength as well as the taking of strenght this relates back to the "Mars, God of War, was one of the lovers of Venus, Goddess of Love. Here Mars is asleep and unarmed, while Venus is awake and alert. The meaning of the picture is that love conquers war, or love conquers all. " this is her taking back the strength.
